We spend a great deal of our time in our homes, so it’s worth considering from time to time the quality of our indoor air. Did you know that air quality inside our homes is often worse than outside air? In this blog, we are going to look at one area in the home that can really affect the air we breathe – our air conditioning units and HVAC system, more specifically, their filters.

How frequently should the filters be cleaned? As a general rule, you would want to clean or replace the filters at least every three months. However, there are circumstances where you would benefit from doing this more often than that. Here are a few examples:

In large households, especially those with pets, dust, and dander will accumulate much quicker, so changing the filters regularly will greatly help indoor air quality.

Homes that have allergy sufferers also need to clean or replace their a/c filters regularly. You should also do this in households where there is a smoker.

Your home’s location also plays a role in how frequently the filters should be changed. For example, if you live in an area where there is a lot of construction, or in an agricultural zone, this can affect your indoor air quality. The same is true if there have been wildfires in the area.

Last but not least, you must immediately replace any filters that are damp, wet, or damaged in any way – this can create an ideal environment for mold, which would drastically reduce your indoor air quality.
