Are you planning a move to a new home? Anyone who has moved house knows what a tremendously stressful time it can be. When under that much stress, we don’t always make the best decisions, and very often our good intentions towards being environmentally responsible are quickly forgotten on the day of the move. So, what is the solution?

The key to reducing the stress of moving day is sorting as much as you can out way ahead of time. Don’t view it as a monumental task, rather take a little time each day to sort through some of your possessions. You could try putting them in different piles. For example, one could be for items you will keep, one for items to donate, and one for a yard sale. This will allow you to recycle the items you no longer want instead of throwing them out, which will help you to reduce your impact on the environment.

Other items you should dispose of ahead of moving day are electronic equipment, batteries, chemicals, and old paint cans, etc. that have accumulated over time. If you were to wait until moving day to get rid of them, you may be tempted to dispose of them in a less than environmentally friendly way.

An added benefit to sorting things out ahead of time is you will only take the things you really want with you to your new home, making unpacking that much easier.
