As we discussed in our last blog, we all face the possibility that a natural disaster could happen where we live – this forces us to think about how prepared we really are. Very often a natural disaster requires us to evacuate from our homes, leaving them at the mercy of the elements. Although we cannot stop a natural disaster from damaging our property, we may be able to prevent some of the damage it can cause. We can do this by having a good routine for home maintenance. Here are a few things you can do to reduce the potential for property damage during a natural disaster.

One thing you should inspect on a regular basis is the home’s drainage system. Clear away any blockages or debris that could affect the property’s ability to drain water away from the house. Ensure that the roof and any chimneys attached are in good shape and have no loose shingles or other things that could detach and become projectiles in strong winds. To prevent trees from becoming tangled in power lines or breaking off and causing damage, keep them well-trimmed and maintained. If you live in an area that has the potential for wildfires, make sure you have sufficient defensible space surrounding your property.

How well do you know your property? Why is this important? If you need to leave the home quickly in an emergency, you can prevent a lot of damage by switching off the utilities in your home. Becoming well acquainted with the locations of shut-off valves to water, electricity, and gas will help you to be well prepared and give you the confidence that you have done all you can to protect your home.
